The Baldwin County School District (BCSD) has been awarded the Innovation in Nutrition Education Award from Action for Healthy Kids (AFHK), part of the Healthy Meals Incentives Recognition Awards. This national honor highlights school districts that are engaging students in creative, hands-on approaches to nutrition education.
At Baldwin High School, students participate in a unique aquaponics program where 79 fish sustain a greenhouse ecosystem, teaching lessons in biology, agriculture and sustainability. The harvest from the greenhouse supports fresh offerings in the school cafeteria, connecting classroom learning directly to student meals.
“We are proud of this recognition and the work it represents,” said Superintendent Dr. Kristina Brooks. “Our students are not only learning science and agriculture, but also gaining a deeper understanding of where their food comes from and how it impacts their health.”
The award recognizes the leadership of Nutrition Wellness Coordinator Aketi Mayweather and Nutrition Department Director Susan Nelson. Mayweather was also featured in a statewide Georgia Department of Education video showcasing innovative nutrition initiatives across the state.
“This project is a perfect example of how nutrition education can be both fun and meaningful,” said Mayweather. “Our students are learning skills that will stay with them well beyond high school.”
BCSD joins school districts across the nation being honored for pioneering approaches, from cooking competitions to locally sourced food tastings. Together, these efforts showcase the impact of engaging students in lifelong healthy habits.
