Exercising Made Accessible

As people age, exercising and staying active can become difficult. For this reason, the Picayune Carver Culture Center is inviting the community to participate in their chair exercise programs.
“Chair Exercise Mornings” take place every Tuesday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. This no-commitment program is free for the public and is designed to help participants stay active, strengthen their muscles, reduce the risk of falls, and improve blood flow and immune function.
Although targeted at an older audience, the Picayune Carver Culture Center welcomes anyone who wishes to participate.
“You can be black, white, Hispanic, asian, young or old- it doesn’t matter,” Leonard Bender, frequent participant, states. “We want everyone to come and participate. We are a community.”
The youngest participant is currently 68 years old, while the oldest will turn 101 in December.
Organizations sometimes hold presentations to educate participants about nutrition and overall health. In their most recent meeting, professionals presented on food health and sugar awareness.
“It’s just a joy,” Bender said.
