(ST. JOSEPH, Mo.)The Women’s Expo made its return to the Civic Arena this weekend after a several-year hiatus, promoting women’s health and wellness while providing opportunities for socialization and hobbies.
The event, which debuted in 2019 but was interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, emphasized mental health awareness this year.
Event Director Cindy Cornelius highlighted their focus area.
“Our keynote speaker was from Mosaic and the topic was mental health,” Cornelius said. “That was sort of our focus this year, talking about mental health and how important it is. Moving forward, we’ll look at topics that are important especially to women.”
Despite competing weekend events, local vendors reported strong attendance.
Leameana Davis, who sells handmade stationary, appreciated the supportive environment.
“I’m glad we have our own little community here of women who are makers and creators,” Davis said. “This event is focusing on mental health and motivation.”
Susie Nelson, owner of R House home decor in Maryville, shared the personal story behind her business.
She created R House to help support her ill son.
“We’ve been in business a whole year now,” Nelson said. “We see new people every day who had never been there before. It’s really exciting.”
The women business owners acknowledged the challenges of entrepreneurship but emphasized the rewards.
“It’s a lot of work, sometimes you wear many hats,” Davis explained. “But it’s rewarding when you see something you’ve made with your own hands, that pride in something you’ve created.”
Organizers plan to bring back the Women’s Expo next year and are seeking participation from local boutiques, med spas, and restaurants to continue the health and wellness theme.
The event aims to grow as a platform for women-owned businesses and important conversations about women’s wellbeing.
